Mathematica Users Get 100x Performance Boost From NVIDIA CUDA
At SC08, Wolfram Research will demonstrate a new version of Mathematica, the world`s most powerful general computational software, that integrates CUDA, NVIDIA`s parallel GPU computing architecture. This new version is expected to give Mathematica users an unprecedented performance increase of 10-100X in numerical computing, modeling, simulation and visual computations, without the need to learn or write C code.

LLNL, industry leaders to develop advanced technology cluster testbed
The National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has teamed with 10 computing industry leaders to accelerate the development of powerful next-generation Linux clusters in a project dubbed Hyperion.

Los Alamos Supercomputer Remains Fastest in World
The latest list of the TOP500 computers in the world has been announced at the SC08 supercomputing conference in Austin, Texas, and continued to place the Roadrunner supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory as fastest in the world running the LINPACK benchmark -- the industry standard for measuring sustained performance.

Intel Launches Core i7 -- Fastest Processor on the Planet
Intel Corporation introduced its most advanced desktop processor ever, the Intel Core i7 processor. The Core i7 processor is the first member of a new family of Nehalem processor designs and is the most sophisticated ever built, with new technologies that boost performance on demand and maximize data throughput. The Core i7 processor speeds video editing, immersive games and other popular Internet and computer activities by up to 40 percent without increasing power consumption.

Spammers sent packing -- for now -- by Web shutdown
(AP) -- E-mailers, enjoy the early holiday gift: Spam volume has been cut by more than half because Internet providers pulled the plug on a Web hosting firm that was allegedly helping some of the world's most dastardly junk e-mail gangs.

Oak Ridge supercomputer is the world's fastest for science
A Cray XT high-performance computing system at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the world's fastest supercomputer for science. The annual ranking of the world's top 500 computers (www.top500.org) will be released Tuesday in Austin at an annual international supercomputing conference.

Putting a new spin on current research
Physicists in the USA and at the London Centre for Nanotechnology have found a way to extend the quantum lifetime of electrons by more than 5,000 per cent, as reported in this week's Physical Review Letters. Electrons exhibit a property called 'spin' and work like tiny magnets which can point up, down or a quantum superposition of both. The state of the spin can be used to store information and so by extending their life the research provides a significant step towards building a usable quantum computer.

In shift, Microsoft sells software online
Microsoft, which has made billions of dollars selling packaged software, has opened its first online store in the United States offering its ubiquitous programs for downloading.

Can alkaline earth metals be used in quantum computing?
(PhysOrg.com) -- "There are a number of different proposals for quantum computing," Andrew Daley tells PhysOrg.com. "These include solid state or semiconductor as well as atomic and molecular systems. We are considering atomic systems, and more specifically alkaline earth metals."

Sun Microsystems slashes jobs in survival fight
(AP) -- The economic downturn might be pushing Sun Microsystems Inc., one of the storied names in computing, to the brink of extinction.
