Islamic Discussions

Differences Between Christian And Muslim Beliefs
I’m curious to know which Christian beliefs Muslims disagree with and why.Will someone be kind enough to point out a particular Christian belief or doctrine to discuss?Again people my intention is to engage in dialogue NOT debate.God bless,

Non-muslims As Friends?
I have an online friend who is a Non-Muslim. We chat very often, few hours everyday since we both are on holidays. Since our holidays end soon, she wants us to become penpals and she'll be sending me a birthday gift too. I'm not sure whether I should let our friendship continue, because my family says it's condemned to have close friendships with Non-Muslims. I'm certain that's not entirely correct, because if relationships of this level are condemned, how is it even possible for Muslims to marry People of the Book, and how can we leave an impression of our upbringing on them? Please guide with the help of Quran and Sunnah.

Honour & Insult
this is a continuation of a discussion begun in the 'Hypocrisy' thread. The state of play is:Me:I don't deny that some people would be offended [by gratuitous insults]. However the more sophisticated, educated and secure the person the less likely they are to see offence where none exists, and the more likely they are to be able to dismiss as trivial offence that is negligible or given by people who are irrelevant. If my mother is abused while driving, by a driver with an aggression problem I'm not going to take it as an insult to her (or my) honour, for example. I'll feel sorry for the other driver being such a loser with so ,ittle self-control.Cefarix:Would you appreciate the spontaneous creativity of the driver? Sure I dismiss insults as trivial all the time - but an insult is an insult. I am likely to feel sorry for the person and be offended by them at the same time, and mark them as someone not to approach, unless they apologize first. I would be more offended if said insulting person received praise from a large portion of the world, because then the insult isn't so minor anymore. Yes I'd feel sorry for that part of the world, and no, I wouldn't do anything violent, but the person who is being praised and his close supporters would not be welcome near my home or loved ones, as much as I could see to it. I don't go around looking to find insults, and Islam teaches us to make excuses for others' faults. My first reaction would be to feel sorry for the person, and find an excuse for why they would be doing such a thing and maybe they didn't really mean it (maybe they're just upset).Redeem:Sophistication and education have nothing to do with protectiveness. However, they do have something to do with the degree of protectiveness.Islam teaches us to feel protective of our religion, our role models, our brothers and sisters. You're free to follow your westernized ideology, but you shouldn't judge what you can't relate to. I could easily call you callous and insensitive for having no reaction when someone you love and respect is slandered and lied about, but I'm not you. I don't pretend to understand what drives you. But you don't know how the other side feels either, and you shouldn't make these types of sweeping generalizations.Unfortunately I was supposed to be on my way to work 10 minutes ago, so I won;' be able to reply until later tonight or tomorrow. See yas.

Why Anyone Else?
I see that there is a regular custom among Muslims to mention their troubles, even if the intention is not to gripe, to other Muslim siblings as they desire to ease their pain. The reality is: do NOT ease your pain with the Earthly bodies! Ask Allah alone. The point is not only to avoid shirk, but to also let your mind and soul understand that telling others about how painful things are going for you is NOT counsel, it's implying the fact that Allah is not rabb; Sustainer and Provider. Here are some beautiful verses, the stress points in bold.“Thee alone we worship and Thee alone we ask for help.” (1:4)See the stress Allah has given even without marking it? In Arabic, it comes to be:إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُIyyaka Na'budu Wa Iyyaka Nasta'eenThee alone we worship and Thee alone we ask for help.Though it could've been written as simple 'Iyyaka Na'budu Wa Nasta'een', i.e. Thee alone we worship and ask for help, Allah who is the wisest of all, had placed stress by repeating 'Thee alone'. The first Surah, is self-sufficient when it talks about whom to turn for help.“And your Lord says: Call on Me; I will answer your (prayer). But those who are too arrogant to serve Me will surely find themselves in Hell-in humiliation.” (40: 60)“And when My servants ask Thee (O’ Prophet) about Me, then verily I am near, I answer the prayer (Dua) of the supplicant when he beseeches unto Me. So let them hear My call, and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.” (2: 186)"Call on your Lord with humility and in private; for Allah loves not those who trespass beyond bounds." (7:55)This verse fully covers my point, and hopefully it will guide you as well.“And those whom you call upon other than Him are not able to help you, nor can they help themselves." (7:197)Isn't that the same case with humans we pertain to?"Say: Call on those, besides Him, whom you fancy. They have neither the power to remove your troubles nor to change them. Those whom they call upon (besides Allah) desire (themselves) means of access to their Lord; Even those who are nearest: …." (17: 56, 57)This also tells us that those we believe are 'near' to Allah are no alternative for praying to Him.“For Him (alone) is prayer in truth: Any others that they call upon besides Him hear them no more than if they were to stretch forth their hands for water to reach their mouths, but it reaches them not: ….”(13: 14)Alas, we still call upon humans who can do nothing but console us, and that too is insufficient for a soul which naturally craves Allah.And remember, say this prayer at dawn at dusk for sure حَسْبِيَ اللهُ لا إِلَهَ إِلاّ هُوَ عَلَيهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وهُوَ رَبُّ العَرْشِ العَظِيHasbiyallahu La ilaha illa Huwa 'alaihi tawakkaltu wa Huwa Rabbul 'Arshil 'Azeem"Allah is sufficient for me. What about an Islamic lecture where only women are present and some uncover.. will the Angels enter? Peace!

Night Of 15th Of Sha'ban
Assalamu alaykumMufti M. Taqi Usmani: There are many Ahaadith that have been narrated on the virtue of the 15th of Sha'baan. One of them is the narration of Sayyiduna Mu'aadh ibn Jabal (ra) that Rasulullah (saws) said, 'Allah Ta'ala turns to his entire creation on the fifteenth night of Sha’baan and forgives all of them except one who ascribes partners to Him and one who harbours enmity in his heart.' (This Hadith has been recorded by Imaam Tabrani in his Mu’jamul Awsat Hadith6776 and Mu'jamul Kabeer vol.20 pg.108-109) Imaam ibn Hibbaan (RA) has classified this narration as Sahih (authentic) and has included it in his book – al-Saheeh. (see Sahih ibn Hibbaan vol.12 pg.482; Hadith5665). Hafiz al-Haythami (RA) has mentioned that all the narrators of this Hadith are reliable. (Majma-uz-zawaaid vol.8 pg.65) Besides this narration classified as Saheeb by Imaam ibn Hibbaan, there is another classified as sound by Haafiz al-Munzhiri (RA) in his al-Targheeb (vol.3 pg.459). This narration is of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and is recorded by Imaam Bazzaar (RA) in his Musnad. In fact, Hafiz ibn Hajar (RA) has also classified one of its chains as Hasan (sound). (al-Amaalil mutlaqah pgs.119-120) Besides the above, there are many other Sahaaba (ra) that narrated Ahaadith regarding the merit of this night, such as: Abu Hurayra (Musnad al-Bazzaar), Abu Tha’labah (Shu'ubul Imaan), Awf ibn Maalik (Musnad al-Bazzaar), Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas (Musnad Ahmad Hadith6642), Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari (ibn Majah Hadith1390; Shu’ubul Imaan Hadith3833) and others. The collective strength of these narrations cannot be refuted. The general virtue of this night has been accepted by many great Ulama of the past. From among many great scholars which have agreed to the virtue of this night are: Umar ibn Abdul-Aziz, Imaam al-Shaafi'ee, Imaam al-Awzaa’ie, Attaa ibn Yassaar, Imaam al-Majd ibn Abdul-Aziz, ibn Rajab al-Hanbaliy and Hafiz Zaynu-ddeen al-Iraaqiy (Rahmatullaahi alayhim) – refer Laylatul Ma'aarif of Hafiz ibn Rajab pgs.263-264 and Faydhul Qadeer vol.2 pg.317 --->In fact, Hafiz Ahmad ibn Taymiyah has said, 'As for the middle night of Sha'baan, there are various narrations that have been narrated regarding its significance and it has been reported from a group of the Salaf (predecessors) that they performed Salaat in it individually, hence, such a deed cannot be disputed.' (Majmoo' al-Fataawa ibn Taymiyah vol.23 pg.132)

Californians Meet Islam
CAIRO — Through information handouts, Qur'an copies and answers to questions on common misconceptions, Muslims at South California are reaching out to their broader community at the state's public fair. "We want to show that we are part of this community," Arshad Khan of the Sacramento Chapter of Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) told the Sacramento Bee daily on Monday, August 18. "What better way to show that than coming to the State Fair, which gets people of all different backgrounds?" Visitors of the California Public Fair, running from August 15 until September 1, get to know Islam through the "WhyIslam" information booth. During the fair, to be attended by approximately 900,000 people, Muslim volunteers are on hand to answer questions, pass out brochures and give away copies of the Noble Qur'an. Approximately 900,000 people are expected to attend the annual state fair. The booth is part of ICNA's three-year-old project "WhyIslam," which focuses on outreach through direct contacts with non-Muslims in Southern California, home to some 600,000 Muslims. "Problems start with the lack of communication and understanding," Khan believes. A recent US survey revealed that the majority of Americans know very little about Islam and do not see any common grounds between the Muslim faith and their own Christian beliefs. There are between six to seven million Muslims in the US. * Knowledge* For many visitors, the "WhyIslam" booth is a welcome opportunity to find first hand information on Islam. "I don't know any Muslims, and I can't approach a perfect stranger," said Cindy Cassidy. "This was a great way for me to find out more." Standing before the booth, Cassidy, who had little knowledge about Islam, was loaded with questions. "Just out of curiosity – and I don't mean any disrespect," he told volunteer Salihah Bustamam. "Why do you cover your heads?" Bustamam, 25, smiled and answered that Muslim women wear the hijab as an act of obedience to God. She added that hijab also represents a step toward freedom from being judged by the looks rather than the intellect. When Cassidy finally left the booth, she had several brochures, a copy of the Qur'an and the satisfaction that her burning questions had been answered. Al Fink, a retired federal worker, believes the "WhyIslam" booth is a good way to shatter stereotypes. "All they want to do is spread a little knowledge," Fink, a Jew, said of the Muslim volunteers. "Ignorance is dangerous." Source (http://www.islamonline.net/servlet/Satellite?c=Article_C&cid=1218650314201&pagename=Zone-English-News/NWELayout)

Human rights not coined in heaven
*By Dr Wan Azhar Wan Ahmad Senior Fellow/Director, Centre for Syariah, Law & Political Science, Ikim Islam was the first universal religion guaranteeing human rights. This fact is reflected in the Medina Charter, written and ratified 1,400 years ago. * In the middle of July, I attended a dialogue on human civil and political rights at the office of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam). I have some observations to share. It is no exaggeration to say it would appear that the current discourse on human rights has been regarded by certain quarters as the most sacred thing, to the extent that should it come into conflict with any other human interest – be it religious, ethical or legal – the former must always prevail. The notion of human rights seems to have been understood synonymously with unlimited freedom, that mankind is free to do whatever he pleases. Many look delusional and choose to ignore credible reminders. Freedom is never something absolute. The three Semitic religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – teach their followers that Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden because they crossed the limits of freedom prescribed to them in that realm. It is generally true that the doctrine of human rights transcends religious beliefs, political affiliations, socio-economics status, ethnic practices, and so on. But it is not absolute in the sense that when one commits oneself to a certain religion, value system, or state, one is bound by the rules and practices of that religion, system or nation. As such one must be prepared to bear the consequences if those rules are broken. Religious freedom, for example, does not imply an unregulated liberty to choose or change religions as one pleases. Rather it means freedom to practice that particular religion in accordance with the established teachings of that religion. If one’s religion is such that by virtue of its nature being complete and all encompassing, at once projecting truth according to the confines of the nature of man, then to opt to leave that religion due to a whim or fancy is both antithetical to truth and contradictory to the nature of man. All considerations with regard to the concept of ‘worldview’, the ‘nature of man’ and so on must be respected by followers of other religions, particularly if those other religions do not project the same worldview or are devoid of conceptual philosophies relative to the nature of man and the intimate unity between the sacred and the profane. In short, if one’s religion teaches that he/she cannot change religion at whim and fancy, followers of other religions must respect that, especially if they don’t have any provision to the same effect. It is the duty of those within the religion, or those who want to embrace it, to understand this. The idea of human rights does not arise ex nihilo – out of nothing. It arises from responsibility, a failure of which would render the so-called ‘rights’ unjust. My emphasis is, a right is not independent of responsibility. A ‘right’ implies that it must be true, good, genuine, beneficial, justifiable, and so on. One just cannot claim a right to be right if it is wrong, false, evil, harmful or unjustifiable, i.e. against one's worldview as defined by religion, the rules of ethics and morality, or law, including the law of nature. In the Malaysian context, why is it that certain individuals and non-governmental organisations appear to regard foreign documents on human rights as noble or sacred as religious texts? One possible explanation for this is perhaps they have become disillusioned secularists, detaching themselves from all forms of religious control, or value systems. This would explain why secularism is a common enemy of all religions and value systems. Why have those same groups of people come to regard those international documents as being nobler than our Federal Constitution – the supreme law of the land? Section 4(4) of The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act 1999 clearly states that “? regard shall be had to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 to the extent that it is not inconsistent with the Federal Constitution”. Therefore, it would imply that any contradiction to any provision in the Constitution must either be rejected, or carefully scrutinised so as to make it in line with the spirit of the Constitution. If the Constitution is premised upon some considerations for a particular religious precept, then all the more reason for an erudite understanding of that religious precept. There are also impressions that the promotion and protection of human rights is something alien to the worldview of Islam. This is perhaps a result of the shortcomings within Muslims or their institutions, for example, their over zealousness in administering matters affecting non-Muslims. Many are not aware that some of those actions are against Islamic principles. Many are ignorant that the religion of Islam is in fact the first universal religion guaranteeing human rights. This fact is reflected in the Medina Charter, the world’s first constitutional document written and ratified by all parties concerned 1,400 years ago. Compared with the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948, the Medina Charter precedes the United Nations’ declaration by one-and-half millennium! Note that Islam is the only religion that truly affords the non-Muslims their fair share. Sceptics who doubt the authenticity of my previous remark can refer to old and new historical data, until to the 20th cen-tury. Islam was also the first religion, from its very inception, which tremendously elevated the status of women and reinstated their dignity when most parts of the world treated them as slaves, as mere sexual objects and a commodity to be traded. The general public must understand that the modern doctrine concerning human rights is neither divine nor sacred; it is primarily based on the secular teleo-logical philosophy of humanism where man is the measure of all things, good and evil. It is my contention that some of the ideas surrounding the modern interpretation of human rights run counter to those professed by religion. Particularly for Muslims, the contemporary discourse on human rights must not be placed above the religion of Islam. A scrutiny of the latter will show that it does not conflict with the former. If there appear to be contradiction, it is the result of man’s feeble mindedness and ignorance, and not the fault of Islam. Israel ready to provide security to Musharraf?
*Israel ready to provide security to Musharraf? * Friday, August 15, 2008 By Hamid Mir ISLAMABAD: Israeli President Shimon Peres is desperately trying to help his friend President Pervez Musharraf and is putting indirect pressure on the coalition government through different diplomatic channels not to impeach him, Foreign Office sources reveal. The sources claim that Peres wants a safe exit for Musharraf and he is also ready to provide security to his friend outside Pakistan. These sources also claim that Peres and Musharraf are in regular contact with each other for the last three years. Both met first in Davos in January 2005 and since then they have been writing letters to each other and exchanging pleasantries on telephone regularly. According to the sources, Peres wrote his first-ever official letter to Musharraf in October 2007, appreciating his efforts in the fight against terrorism. Musharraf, in his response, thanked the Israeli president for his support and good wishes. These letters were exchanged through diplomatic channels of Turkey. Peres called his Pakistani friend again a few days ago. Though the details of their conversation were not available with the Foreign Office yet it is believed that Peres offered his friend some help. Informed sources are of the view that Israel has strong friendly relations with Turkey and is in a position to provide security to Musharraf in Turkey. One close friend of Musharraf is also busy in lobbying for him in the Jewish lobby in the US these days. This friend of Musharraf has met many leaders of the World Jewish Congress recently. Musharraf even praised this friend publicly in recognition of his services for facilitating him to address the Jewish lobby in New York. This special friend still enjoys ministerial status in Pakistan without being elected and despite the fact that he is an American citizen. It has been learnt that the same friend is requesting his American Jewish contacts to do something for the safe exit of Musharraf through Israeli President Shimon Peres. Peres had openly said in October 2001 that he prayed for the life of Musharraf every morning as he (Musharraf) had signed his death warrant by changing the Afghan policy of Pakistan. After that, Musharraf also came into contact with the late Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon. He also met Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak in January this year in Paris. Diplomatic sources claim that Musharraf is the most popular Pakistani leader in Israel. He was the first Pakistani leader who was invited to address the World Jewish Congress in the US in 2005. After that historic event, the then foreign minister of Pakistan Khurshid Kasuri met his Israeli counterpart Silvon Shalom in Turkey in 2005. Musharraf had asked the Foreign Office in early 2007 to prepare a plan for the recognition of Israel but it did not materialise due to the political turmoil started in March 2007. It is also pertinent to mention here that Indian National Security Adviser MK Narayanan was the first foreign leader to come out openly in support of Musharraf on Wednesday, saying his impeachment would only help extremist elements in the country. The same Indian leader had declared on December 19, 2007 that India could trust Musharraf but not Benazir Bhutto. Musharraf knows that he is still popular among the Indian and Israeli establishments and has a lot of friends in Western capitals as well. If provided a safe exit, he can find a new role for himself in international diplomacy. Highly placed sources in the coalition government claim that Musharraf is now completely isolated and he has informed Asif Ali Zardari, through the governor Punjab, that he would resign if provided special indemnity. However, the coalition government is not ready to provide him indemnity and in that case he would face the first-ever humiliating impeachment process, which would definitely make history in Pakistan http://www.canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/4504

Musharraf steps down: It’s no time for 'individual bravado’, he says
AgenciesPakistani President Pervez Musharraf, facing impeachment on charges drawn up by the governing coalition, has announced that he is resigning.He went on national TV to say that while he was confident the charges would not stand, this was not the time for more confrontation.He is accused of violation of the constitution and gross misconduct.Musharraf has been a key ally of the US in its "war on terror" since he took power in a bloodless coup in 1999.Reaction in Pakistan is overwhelmingly one of relief that a bruising and lengthy impeachment battle has been avoided, the BBC's Mark Dummett reports from Islamabad.

A mixed legacy
Agency, IslamabadFor nearly a decade Pervez Musharraf was the most powerful man in Pakistan.His resignation marks the end of an era for a country facing enormous economic and security challenges.He will be remembered for many things.He overthrew an elected government in a military coup. He took Pakistan to the brink of war with India, only to launch a sustained peace process a few years later.In the aftermath of the 11 September attacks in New York and Washington he declared his full support for the United States and became a key player in the American-led war on terror.

The 'Five Pillars' of Islam

The 'Five Pillars' of Islam are the foundation of Muslim life:

(1) Faith or belief in the Oneness of God and the finality of the prophethood of Muhammad;

(2) Establishment of the daily prayers;

(3) Concern for and almsgiving to the needy;

(4) Self-purification through fasting; and

(5) The pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able.

Read further here:

http://www.ummah.com/pillars/index.php

On the authority of Ibn Omar, the son of Omar bin Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with both, who said : I heared the messenger of Allah say : "Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammed is the messenger of Allah, performing the prayers, paying the zakat, making the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan."

Also on the authority of Omar, who said : One day while we were sitting with the messenger of Allah there appeared before us a man whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was exceedingly black; no signs of journeying were to be seen on him and none of us knew him. He walked up and sat down by the prophet. Resting his knees against his and placing the palms of his hands on his thighs, he said:"O Muhammed, tell me about Islam". The messenger of Allah said: "Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and Muhammed is the messenger of Allah, to perform the prayers, to pay the zakat, to fast in Ramadhan, and to make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so." He said:"You have spoken rightly", and we were amazed at him asking him and saying that he had spoken rightly. He said: "Then tell me about eman ."He said:"It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe in divine destiny, both the good and the evil thereof. " He said:"You have spoken rightly". He said: " Then tell me about ehsan ." He said: "It is to worship Allah as though you are seeing Him, and while you see Him not yet truly He sees you". He said: "Then tell me about the Hour". He said: "The one questioned about it knows no better than the questioner." He said: "Then tell me about its signs." He said: "That the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress and that you will see the barefooted, naked, destitute herdsman competing in constructing lofty buildings." Then he took himself off and I stayed for a time. Then he said: "O Omar, do you know who the questioner was?" I said: "Allah and His messenger know best". He said: "He was Jebreel (Gabriel), who came to you to teach you your religion."
